Paks
Paks lies in the centre of the country on the right bank of the Danube, at the end of the bend beginning at Dunaföldvár. Here we may find the only atomic power station in Hungary.
Amongst the sights of the settlement we may find the remains of Lussonium, a Roman military camp. On Sánchegy Hill we find the Bottyán Castle, dating from the 18th Century.
A fine view over the Danube may be enjoyed from several points in the town. The banks of the Danube entice us to take a romantic stroll along them. A natural feature is the country’s densest 60m high loess cliff, which provides a picture book of the geographical history of the last two million years.
This is a true festival town. Its most famous event is the internationally renowned Gastro-Blues Festival, whilst the Beer Festival and Whitsuntide Festival are also extremely popular.
The Danube has always played a major role in the life of the town. This was also true in ancient times when in Roman times military bases were established on the hills overlooking the river, and also today when the river cools the country’s only nuclear power station.
