BORONKA-MELLÉK NATURE CONSERVATION AREA

The Nature Conservation area is located in the Belső-Somogy area, in the western half of the Transdanubian hill region. Following the First World War, the Hunyadi family created the economic narrow-gauge railway and the fishing lake system and introduced planned forestry. The Nature Conservation area is largely covered by woodlands divided by water-courses and fishing lakes. The unperturbedness of the region was also aided by the fact that in 1944, the Germans created a triple mine barrage here. By 1956, the mines were fully disposed of by mine-sweeping forces. The forest gives home to the old barren lands such as Cserfekvés, Virágospuszta, Szőkepuszta, Háromház, Kopárpuszta, and Kakpuszta. Some of these are starting to come back to life again.

The natural treasures of the region can be best discovered through a professional guided tour. The Boronka-mellék area is covered with woodlands and divided by water-courses and boasts very varied flora. A wide variety of plants are represented on the grounds ranging from marshlands to dry sandy turf lands.

The narrow-gauge railway is ideal for a trip along the places where the once densely populated barren lands were. Today, there are forests and streams here.

In the region we can marvel at the fishing lakes and floral rarities such as the cyclamen (blooming in autumn), followed by a visit to the ruins of the Second World War front line. Our guide will tell you lots of interesting things about the effect of warfare on nature.
